I haven't got a name for this game yet, but it is my biggest and most ambitous game yet. It's a story based single player, first person, vehicle shooter. Set in a dystopian world, you play as a taxi driver in a city ran by a controlling corporation and overrun with numerous gangs. As a taxi driver the player will take on passengers, get them safely to their destination and accept missions from the different gang factions, unlocking more areas of the city while trying to stay a live.
This game is being developed in HDRP.
My asset 'Arcade Vehicle Controller' works well in first person, and feels great as the movement for this game. Development is currently concentrating on building the city. I found a city generator
tool which I utilised to create the layout of the city.
Each city block is a 'sub scene' and I'm using Unity's entity sytem to quickly load/ unload those as needed.
I created a tool to help aid with the placement of buildings, making it more random so the city looks a lot less repeated (even though buildings are reused). A post about that is available here.
During whiteboxing/ prototyping I tested a spline system for laying the roads.
Once each city block has buildings in, other systems can start to be developed. Traffic and pedestrians to populate the city. Passenger system for ongoing and random taxi fares. Weapon, gang, mission systems.
The city will be broken up into four sections, each with a distinctive look - from a cleaner, slightly better off area, to poor and industrial. The layout is using a loose New York style block numbering.
