Using AR to Place Lights

About

About a year ago we bought some new wall lights for our living room, but I wasn't sure where to place them, or at whic orientation (vertical or horizontal).
I wanted to know where would be the best place to position the lights to give us the best lighting. I'd seen in the past AR apps that you can use to scan the world to produce a 3d model, so I went and found a free app called 'Room Scanner - Measure & Plan'. The model this produced was a bit disappointing, outputting just cubes. However, this was enough to do what I wanted.

To get something close to real world lighting, I imported the model into a new Unity HDRP project. The model needed a bit of tidying up, for example the mantle had been made a cube that reached down to the floor and blocked the fireplace. But mostly the model had gotten the shape of the room correct.

All that was left to do was create some approximations of the lights and adding their lighting. After doing that I tried different positions and rotations, results below.

The final look after installing the new lights.
